For Women

Women centered therapy takes into account the present stressors and historical expectations of women of all backgrounds and cultures both as individuals and within her family and greater community.  Women centered therapy is nonpathologizing, emphasizes empowerment and collaboration.  Women centered therapy focuses on the nature and quality of the therapeutic relationship to learn new beliefs, attitudes and behaviors that are more fitting to personal empowerment within all life spheres. This includes, but is not limited to, the personal and family, the social and political as well as work life balance.

For Men

Currently, there is a large spectrum of what masculinity is, what being a man means. This spectrum has brought new freedom as well as new, sometimes unbidden, responsibilities. As one writer puts it, “men are not the new women; they are the new everything.” What does that mean for you, the reader? Many men come to therapy with beliefs and attitudes still deeply rooted in the pressures men feel to live up to a masculine image or role that has dictated men should not show weakness, pain, or emotional struggle. As a result of these beliefs and the modern conflicts of what it means to take on these new roles and responsibilities, some men medicate emotional, psychological and physical pain through abuse of alcohol, drugs, violence and other risky behaviors. Furthermore, as men have traditionally developed relationships through action oriented activities, as opposed to women who may well develop relationship through disclosure of personal information, the idea of engaging in a sit down, talk together therapeutic relationship is perhaps not only foreign but deeply uncomfortable.

In response, I work to ensure your physical and emotional safety. I make tasks clear and maintain appropriate boundaries. I emphasize your choice and personal control throughout therapy. We collaborate to determine the skill building best suited to your needs and goals. We work to resolve the complex and learn to live with imperfection.

Lastly, for some men, the path to manhood has been paved by emotional trauma. Men suffer emotional and physical abuse in silence and often suffer alone with the experience and memories of abuse. Many have noted that they can find no way to live with the truth of having been a victim and still see themselves as men. Thus men may find themselves identifying with their abuser as a means of reclaiming personal power and attempting to secure safety. In therapy, regardless of the forces that have moved you toward this experience, we will face your history and focus on your assets, increase your sense of self worth and competence, celebrate your personal growth and work respectfully with the difficulties inherent in change.
